ONCE WE WERE ISLANDS
ACTIONS FOR THE WORTHLESS BODY

logbuch woche  04.

(CG)

In this last week we continued our research – exploring and developing in the final days and hours, trying to keep experiments going. We spent time working with the voice and the multitudes of text we had been generating over the residency, trying to find ways to layer these over the physical actions and tasks. Singing. Call and response. Remembering. Describing tasks. Reading lists of tools. Sliding narratives … A lot of things didn’t work. We placed text of the ‘empty body’, as it seemed to allow this layer more easily than the other actions. Here, there is a lot more discovery and research to do – how to bring this world of words and this world of actions (things) together on stage.
Here below are some thoughts, glimmers and questions that arose in the last days:

(AB)

The perfect activity to project any meaning and imagination onto it.
The nothingness.

How active can we be while training inactivity?
What is the best choice of reading into the scene to function as a shift of worlds?

(RA)

We have been working in darkness. The actual darkness of the room. The metaphorical darkness of the subject matter. The darkness between us as we try to forge ways to work together. It seems inevitable, somehow, that our work will take place half in shadow, under the glare of a lamp. We are deep below the surface.

I like the dark. I like what it doesn’t show. I like the fact that it’s not all clinical and not everything is on display.

There was a moment when the light got involved in itself. It started listening to the stories it was telling itself and it went off on its own trajectory.…

Logbuch #33 Woche 3

ONCE WE WERE ISLANDS
ACTIONS FOR THE WORTHLESS BODY

logbuch woche  03.

(CG)

This third week of our time in Oldenburg manifested a lot of words and lot of questions, as well as shapes, tasks, things on the stage. Words appeared as light on the skin. Questions hung in the air. Crackled through Skype connections.

Here we collect some of our research questions that could be written down, and that remain in a state of exploration >>>

(RA)

Q: What happens when ‚thingify‘ the body on stage?
Q: What happens when we ‘wordify’ the body on stage?
Q: Can we ’thingify’ then ‘wordify’ then ’thingify’ then ‘wordify’ the body? Flipping in succession
Q: When we ‘flip’ the thing reality and the word reality of a person or an object in the view of the onlooker, does Reality sparkle through?

(LM)

In this four weeks together:
Q: When is something interesting on stage?
Q: Who defines that?
Q: Is it important that it is interesting for everybody?
Q: Is there something you all feel clearly ‚ah, that’s exciting and interesting‘?

Q: What is the minimum agreement in order to do something with full engagement?
Q: Does it need agreement?
Q: Is there a fear of not being recognized? Of not being understood?
Q: Is there a fear that nothing concrete will be produced?

Q: How do your own positions as artists as four people finding ways of working together, as displaced researchers in oldenburg, as meshworks of various differentiating and/ or solidarizing experiences, manifest on stage?

Q: What is it with this taking each others place on stage?
Q: How does that work?
Q: Can everybody embody the three attitudes you were talking about?
Q: How does one attitude change to another one?

Q: Is there an overruling power structure that you agreed on before and have to perform now endlessly?…

Logbuch #33 Woche 1

ONCE WE WERE ISLANDS
ACTIONS FOR THE WORTHLESS BODY

logbuch woche  01.

As ONCE WE WHERE ISLANDS, we: Chris Gylee, Richard Aslan, Alexander Carrillo, and Ana Berkenhoff meet in Oldenburg. We are artists from different professions: choreography, dance, stage design, writing, fine art, performing, and we are interested in the common aesthetic approach to our work.

Our work is about work.

ACTIONS FOR THE WORTHLESS BODY:

CHRIS: starts going over the list of colours in their head

ROSE – right hand raised, fingers waving
ASH – forearms horizontal to the floor
FERN – left hand raised
CRYSTAL – fingers together, crystal shape, wiggling

OIL – draw a circle around the waist
FLINT – grab the forearm, strong
SURF – roll the hands
AMBER – hold a circle up to the eye with both hands

MOON – draw a big circle
MOSS – fingers grow up from the earth

PELT – stroke the front of the body, both hands
JET – right hand zooms forward
MAGMA – hand is burnt! Withdraw and protect

Do the actions and say the words.
Just say the words.
Just think the words.
